The Lotus Sutra Chapter V Herbs（9）
? Only the Tathāgata exactly perceives and knows without obstructions the various states in which sentient beings reside. “It is just like the grasses, trees, shrubs, and herbs that do not know their own natures, whether they are superior, mediocre, or inferior.
? 眾生住於種種之地，唯有如來如實見之，明了無礙。如彼卉木叢林諸藥草等，而不自知上中下性。
? 衆生處于種種境界，唯有如來佛可以如實得見，明了無礙，好比花木藥草并不知道自己的上、中、下品性。
? Yet the Tathāgata knows the teachings of one aspect and character, the character of liberation, dispassion, cessation, complete nirvana, and eternal tranquility which ultimately leads to emptiness. “The Buddha knows this and perceives the aspirations of sentient beings. For this reason, in order to protect them, he does not immediately teach omniscience.
? 如來知是一相一味之法——所謂：解脫相、離相、滅相——究竟涅槃常寂滅相，終歸於空。佛知是已，觀眾生心欲而將護之，是故不即為說一切種智。
? 如來佛知道這種吟唯一實相、唯一佛智之法，所謂解脫相、離一切相、寂滅相、徹底涅槃相，究其質，終歸于空。佛了知這種妙理後，又觀察到衆生内心的各種欲念，所以，爲了保護無上妙法不至爲這些心性尚低的衆生的诽謗，佛一開始并不急于爲衆生講說至高無上的佛智。
